OVERVIEW - Quotes from Philadelphia
Eagles 2005
6th Round draft pick Calvin Armstrong
Armstrong is a tall, physical tackle with great size and
a large wingspan. He has been the anchor of the Cougars' offensive
line since his redshirt freshman year, joining Sam Lightbody
to give Washington State one of the top tackle tandems in
the West.
Armstrong attended Centralia (Wash.) High School, where he
earned three varsity letters each in football and basketball.
During his junior year, he earned All-Rivers League honors
as a defensive lineman and was also named to the All-Lewis
County team by the Centralia Chronicle.
He added all-league second team accolades in basketball that
year. As a senior, he received All-West Region honors by Student
Sport, adding team MVP, Daily Olympian all-area and Associated
Press all-state honors on both offense and defense. He was
selected to play in the State East-West Shrine Game in Spokane.
Armstrong has been in the starting lineup since the third
game of the 2001 season, except for missing a start vs. Arizona
State in 2001 due to a concussion and sitting out the 2002
Stanford and Arizona games with an ankle sprain. He played
in 12 games, starting nine contests at left tackle in 2001.
Armstrong earned first-team All-Pac 10 Conference honors
as a sophomore, starting the first three games at right tackle
before shifting to the left side. He was an honorable mention
All-Pac 10 performer in 2003 and was named Pac-10 Player of
the Week vs. Stanford in 2004.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a big frame, with a thick torso, long arms,
big hands, good bubble, wide waist and hips...When he sets
low in pass protection, he shows good drive coming off the
ball and quick reactions picking up the blitz
Shows good hand placement and the ability to pull in the
short area...Has decent slide agility and can redirect, reach,
hook and downblock when isolated on the edge...Does a good
job of working with his guards to switch off on stunts...Has
a frame that can carry additional weight...His large wingspan
allows him to keep defenders from attacking his body
Plays with decent leverage and is best when moving laterally
down the line...Uses his large hands well to reach, lock-on
and steer defenders wide...Has the quickness to get to the
second level and showed marked improvement neutralizing linebackers
in 2004...Stays on his feet and shows good balance vs. the
bull rush.
Negatives: Not explosive coming off the ball, showing marginal
leg drive...Lacks a good hand punch and relies more on placement
and pushing in order to sustain...Does not control the defenders
well after initial contact, as he is slow to recoil with his
hands...Lacks good knee bend to get a good anchor
Might have to shift to guard, not only because of his short-area
pulling ability, but also because of his struggles handling
the speed rush...Needs to improve his overall strength, as
he does not jar defenders with his punch...Must learn to stay
lower in his pads, as he fails to bend at the knees when he
gets too high in his stance...Effective when making the reach
blocks, but will do more catching, as he plays too soft to
dominate
Struggles some when a defender lines up over his head...Lacks
the leg drive needed to fight counter moves, but hangs in
to battle...Can make second level blocks, but tends to lose
balance when he crosses his feet on the run.
