JOHN FRANK
DL | (6-3 3/4, 280, 4.8) | Utah
by Pro Football Weekly Drafted by: Philadelphia, Pick 12, Round
6 , Overall 178
Notes:
Signed with the Utes in 1992 but before attending a class went to
Spain on his church mission. Returned in '95 and was rusty, so he
redshirted. Had 13 stops in '96. Started four games in '97, including
the last two, and had 19 tackles and four sacks. Was an all-Western
Athletic Conference defensive end in '98, when he had 36 stops,
10 sacks and eight other tackles for loss. Named the Mountain West
Defensive Player of the Year in '99, when he had 58 tackles, 20
tackles for loss and 13 sacks. Also picked off a pass. Frank has
played rugby and tennis and is an accomplished musician and singer.
Positives:
Has excellent work ethic and competitiveness. Is strong for
his size, with a 440-pound bench press. Also has good lower-body
explosion. Has vertical-jumped a team-best 37.4 inches. Has good
quickness and speed. Can play with strength and leverage when he
keeps his pads low. Can also jump up and bat passes down. Improved
dramatically every year in college.
Negatives:
Has great workout numbers but does not really play to them.
Is not as big and powerful as scouts want an inside player to be.
Overaged. Will turn 26 in July.
Summary:
A late-maturing, big-effort player who has pretty good ability,
great workout numbers and a burning desire to be the best he can
be.
