Eagles sign Mamula
to four-year extension
Philadelphia, PA (TSN) - The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed
to terms on a new four-year, $11.5 million contract with
defensive end Mike Mamula. The Eagles' first-round draft pick
-- seventh overall -- in the 1995 NFL Draft, missed the entire
1998 campaign after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason.
The 6-4, 252-pound Mamula starred at Boston College before joining
the NFL four years ago. In 46 professional games,
including 45 starts, the 25-year-old has notched 17.5 sacks.
Mamula, who headed for the greener pastures of the NFL after
his junior year at BC, enjoyed his best NFL season in 1996,
when he tallied eight sacks in 16 starts.

PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 11, 1999) After spending the 1998
season on injured reserve with a torn ACL, defensive end Mike
Mamula decided not to test the free agent market, signing a four-year
contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles.
As is club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
The 25-year-old Mamula was eligible to become an unrestricted
free agent tomorrow, but he was more than happy with Philadelphia's
four-year offer while rehabilitating from a major knee injury.
"Being signed to a four-year deal is something I appreciate,"
Mamula said. "It lets me know the organization wants me to
be here. And I want to be here."
Mamula suffered a torn ACL and torn lateral meniscus cartilage
in his right knee during the Eagles' second preseason game against
Pittsburgh. After months of rehabilitation he is expected to be
ready for training camp this summer.
"All the reports we have received to date indicate that
he will be ready to go when training camp opens," Eagles
director of football operations Tom Modrak said. "His progress,
his rehabilitation has been positive. He seems to have a better
appreciation of what football means to him. Mike's hungry."
Mamula will likely start at left end after Hugh Douglas took
over at Mamula's right end spot last year and led the Eagles with
12½ sacks.
"These guys come off the end with speed," Modrak said.
"Our defensive staff believes we can move them around, take
advantage of matchups and create situations that are in our favor."
The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Mamula, a first-round pick in 1995,
started 45 games in his first three seasons and totaled 17½
sacks, 72 quarterback pressures, 5 forced fumbles and 4 fumble
recoveries.
In addition to Mamula, the Eagles announced the signing of fourth-year
linebacker Dana Howard.
Howard, a sixth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 1995, has
played for the St. Louis Rams, Chicago Bears and NFLE's Frankfurt
Galaxy during his four-year pro career
